ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS
Missing bone mass? You could still get a dental implant
Have you been told that dental implants were not an option for you? You may not have to take “no” for an answer any longer. Zygomatic dental implants may be the answer.
For the longest time, if you did not have sufficient bone mass in your upper jaw, the only option available to you was bone graft surgery to rebuild bone mass in your jaw and create a stable foundation for traditional dental implants.
Zygomatic implants provide support for implant dentures when there has been a substantial amount of bone loss from the upper jaw and ordinary implants cannot be used on their own to support a denture. Zygomatic implants correct the loss of facial structure and refresh the appearance of the face.
Once the Zygomatic implants are anchored in the upper jaw inside the zygomatic bone, a provisional prosthesis can be fixed immediately until the complete restoration is achieved. The final prosthesis is fabricated and installed only after adequate healing time has passed to allow for the successful integration of all implants placed during surgery.
Some of the reasons patients are missing bone mass include:
- Long-term tooth loss
- Trauma
- Cancer
- Tumours in the upper jaw region
Some of the advantages of Zygomatic implants
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Shorter recovery time
- Do not require a bone graft
- Quicker healing time
- Patients leave with fully functioning teeth on the day of the procedure
- Painless procedure performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia
- Cost-effective compared to traditional dental implants
- Extractions, zygomatic Implants and the permanent fixed bridge can be done in one visit
What makes zygomatic implants different?
Traditionally, bone grafting was the only way to provide the bone structure required to support implants successfully. The process was time consuming, costly, and often required a sinus lift and autogenous bone grafting before the implants and permanent fixed arch could be set in place.
With the development of zygomatic implants, oral and maxillofacial surgeons like Dr. El-Hakim, Dr. Makhoul and Dr. Gigliotti can now perform implant procedures more efficiently, cost-effectively and comfortably for patients with insufficient bone mass in the upper jaw. Prior to zygomatic implant surgery, a cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan is done to correctly assess the quantity of bone available in your upper jaw and plan the zygomatic implant placement accordingly. More importantly, this step allows the M3L surgical team to confirm that you are a suitable candidate for this type of implant and procedure.
The Procedure
Zygomatic implants are long implants positioned in the upper jaw bone, closest to the zygomatic bone or cheekbone, to provide a solid foundation to support an implant. They are primarily used for supporting a full mouth appliance, such as an upper denture. Implants are anchored on each side of the mouth near the cheekbone (one to two implants) along with two to four additional regular implants that are placed in the front of the mouth, to sustain the new front teeth. This additional support is important to extend the longevity of dental implants in patients with bone loss since their upper jaw bone is usually weakened. It is also possible to exclusively use zygomatic implants to support prosthesis in situations where the bone in the upper jaw is totally insufficient.
The procedure for the placement of zygomatic implants is minimally invasive meaning Dr. El-Hakim, Dr. Makhoul and Dr. Gigliotti do not have to carry out a wide surgical exposure. Moreover, to make the experience as comfortable as possible for patients, this sort of surgery usually takes place under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The recovery time after the procedure is usually around 10 days.
